It’s been a busy couple of years for Einaudi. In 2016, the winery purchased 22 acres of prime land in Barolo. In 2017, owner Matteo Sardagna continued his expansion in Barolo by adding another 5 acres of hilltop vineyards in the Monvigliero cru. Finally, rounding out the whirlwind of activity Einaudi is releasing a new Barolo for the 2014 vintage, Einaudi Barolo “Ludo” DOCG, in 2018. Here’s the breakdown of the lineup:
Barolo “Ludo” DOCG – The Newcomer
Crafted as a Barolo Tradizionale, a winemaking style that old Barolo Producers embrace which involves mixing grapes from different subzones or terroirs that create maximum expressiveness of the wine. For the vintage 2014 the zones are: Bussia, Cannubi and Terlo.
100% Nebbiolo from the Cannubi, Terlo, and Bussia crus. The vines were planted between 1967 and 2002 at an altitude of 721-1,020 feet above sea level. The wine ages 26 months in barriques (25% new) and 30-hl. oak barrels.
Brilliant garnet with amber highlights. The nose has notes of black cherries and blackberries and spices, and on the palate, the wine is full-bodied with a warm and enveloping character and long velvety finish.
Barolo “Cannubi” DOCG – The Cru of Crus
The Cannubi Cru is the most famous vineyard in the Langhe and where it is said that Barolo was born. The area is renown for its light grey Marne of Sant’Agata which produced elegant and perfumed wines. Einaudi’s Cannubi vineyard contains vines over 50 years old.
100% Nebbiolo from the Cannubi cru. The vines were planted between 1962 and 2002 at an altitude of 721 feet above sea level. The wine ages 26 months in barriques (10% new) and 30-hl. oak barrels.
Brilliant garnet with exuberant fruit and spice on nose and palate, luscious, full body and flavors, velvety texture, and spicy finish. The gray-whitish marls of the Cannubi have given the wine a great elegance and a pleasant mineral note.
Barolo Terlo “Vigna Costa Grimaldi” DOCG – The Choice Selection
Made from Nebbiolo grapes from the Costa Grimaldi vineyard within the Terlo Cru. The Terlo Cru was the first purchase Luigi Einaudi made in Barolo and was a point of pride for him. Of the 12 acres that comprise the Terlo Cru only 4.5 acres are dedicated to the Costa Grimaldi vineyard.
100% Nebbiolo from the finest selection of the Costa Grimaldi vineyard located in the Terlo Cru. The vineyard was planted between 1962 and 1977 and is composed of marly-calcareous terrain. The wine ages 26 months in barriques (10% new) and 30-hl. oak barrels.
Garnet red with orange reflections. The nose is expressive with aromas that recall oriental spices, ripe black cherries, walnut and a beautiful floral note of violet. Full-bodied, and velvety on the palate, with a long finish of spice.
